Calendar for the 2015-2016 Season

To make things clearer, we've colour coded the type of meeting:

[    ] Blue is for regular Members' Evenings,

[    ] Green is for Evenings where a visiting speaker will make a

       presentation, and

[    ] Red is for the AGM. Be there, or be on the Committee next year!

1st September 2015

One of the strengths of our Club is the wide range of subjects and material which are collected by our members. The opening meeting of the new season features displays of ‘What I collect, and my recent acquisitions’ and is almost guaranteed to provide something of interest for everyone.

6th October 2015

We have a tradition in our Club of Alphabetic Philately. Each Season we have an evening of Members’ displays based around two letters of the alphabet; one from each half. This year, the two letters are ‘D’ and ‘W’  The only limits are those of imagination!

3rd November 2015

This evening we will be entertained and instructed in equal measure by presentations from two of our members. Mr Adrian Esmat will give a tour around ‘Pearl Harbour’ and Mr Richard Clay will tell us about ‘Nicholas Copernicus.’

1st December 2015

We all enjoyed our Christmas Dinner last year, so again this year we will combine our December meeting with a satisfying collation of turkey and plum pudding, or whatever else takes our fancy. (The Christmas Pudding Lancashire Dairy Ice Cream sounds delicious!)

Names and menu choices are required by mid-November please.

5th January 2016

The theme of the evening is ‘Messages in the Post.’ Messages can be letters, postcards, and postal history of all kinds, but should have passed through the postal service. E-Mail is probably pushing the boundaries just a little bit too far!

2nd February 2016

The first of our Guest Speakers for the season is Mr Gary Cook who will be addressing the unusual subject of ‘Tuberculosis and the Post.’ Prevention of infection was one of the postal services’ concerns and many different methods were used.

1st March 2016

We are used to posting letters and packets, and seeing them arrive in short order at their destinations, but there are many unseen men and women (and machines!) which make all this happen. This evening, Mr Mervyn Wallace will tell us more about ‘Post Office Training, and GPO Ephemera.’

5th April 2016  COMPETITION EVENING

This evening sees the competition for the Norman Barlow Cup. Entries for this competition are to be on nine or twelve sheets and are to show stamps, postal history, postcards etc. of Great Britain, excluding the independent issues of the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Local Issues.

3rd May 2016 THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Not just the AGM, but also the Club Auction, where the success of the sales can have a marked effect on the subscription for the coming year! So, if you want a say in who is on the Committee next year (or even who is not!) don’t forget to turn up!

7th June 2016

It has become traditional in our Club that the last evening of the season should be dedicated to postcards. This year our theme is postards relating to Europe, pre- and post-war.

The Calendar of our Meetings

Even though our previous years’ programmes are now history, it can be interesting to look back at the wide range of speakers and presentations which have both educated and entertained us.
